Tackling the world’s deadliest forwards

Rumours, exaggerations, even blatant lies going around on social media. Believing them can be deadly. TOI regularly exposes such fake news and forwarded claims. Before trusting a forward, people trust TOI.

The one thing that spreads faster than news is fake news. Thousands of rumours, exaggerations and even blatant lies have been created and sent around on digital social media. And when enough people believe in something, it ceases to matter if it’s true or false. The result is often deadly.

The Times of India has campaigned vigorously against the irresponsible use of social media, regularly exposing potentially lethal falsehoods. So whenever someone opens the TOI to check the veracity of a forwarded claim, that’s the biggest proof of our success.
