A breath of fresh air

In 2014, WHO declared Delhi the world’s most polluted city. TOI launched ‘Let Delhi Breathe’. The campaign’s proposals about Peripheral Expressways, emission norms and old vehicles were implemented by the government. And Delhi could breathe easier. Read on to find out more.

In 2014, a WHO report revealed Delhi to be the world’s most polluted city. On behalf of Delhi’s people, TOI decided to take this up as an issue and launched a campaign called Let Delhi Breathe.

Many of the proposals put forward in the campaign were recognized and implemented by the government. The construction of the much-delayed Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways was expedited. 10-year-old diesel vehicles were banned in NCR and Euro 6 norms were rolled out across India. While the battle isn’t yet over, these changes are a vindication of the trust that citizens have reposed in TOI.
