It was 1992. Harshad Mehta, the Big Bull, was manipulating the banking system to generate funds for gaming the stock market. He and his cronies made crores and the market index crashed from 4500 to 2500. A TOI journalist investigated Mehta and exposed the scam in a brilliant example of courageous journalism.

 

As a result, Mehta was arrested on November 9 and India’s most notorious stock market swindle came to an end. It was a victory for journalism and for India’s most trusted newspaper.
